Has it really been a month??

Well, since for a while I've been trying to come up with something witty and original to post on the blog and have failed miserably, I think I'll revert to something I wrote a while ago. This was for a creative writing class. See what y'all think. Any and all comments welcome. Like it? Hate it? Think it could use some improvement? Have suggestions? Let me know. Ta!

"A Run From Cover"

I look up from my book,
startled. Four deer
explode
from their hiding place across the clearing
like a covey of quail flushed out by a pointer.
Following closely in a long tawny curve of
terror
is a cougar, the black tip of its tail
waving and balancing
like the hand of an intent gymnast on a beam.
The lead doe's frightened bawl resounds,
a tinny echo in the meadow,
chilling,
fruitless.
The cougar's claws dig into the dirt,
flexing,
as if it has already caught its prey and is
tearing apart flesh and fur rather than earth and grass.
I sit beneath the tree,
praying that the deer will get away –
and praying that they won't.
If they do, I will become the cougar's next
target.
The little stampede passes
in a flurry of hoofbeats,
crackling twigs, and
panicked, labored breaths.
I sit and shake, gasping at the savage
beauty,
delighting in the play of sunlight on golden fur
and the ripple of muscle beneath it
that carries the big cat across the clearing like
a wind-up
toy
across a table –
and trying to block out the
scream
quickly silenced
by the closing of powerful jaws.
The cougar's prey could just as easily have been
me.

Thank you both for your kind comments! I am truly sorry that I couldn't come up with anything else. I don't know what's the matter with me. I just have not had anything that interesting or unusual happen to me lately, and so have had nothing interesting or unusual to write about. :(

By the way, I wrote this piece last fall. It was inspired by a painting I'd seen several years earlier: "A Run From Cover" by Bob Kuhn. It's hanging in the Wehle Gallery at Genesee Country Museum.

If you want to see other stuff he's done, go to google.com, type in "bob kuhn," and select the "images" tab instead of "web." He's done some amazing stuff.

Oh, and thank you, SFL, for clearing up the difference between "dear" and "deer." I am sure I shall sleep much easier now.

;)

By the way, please make sure to keep this poem out of view of poor WOT!

Tell WOT that I am very sorry. I should have posted a warning before posting the poem. I know just how she feels. I saw something today that would have made WOT require even stronger therapy...in fact, I think I shall need some. Could I perhaps partake of some of your dementia? I have need of it. There's a lot I'd like to forget about right now. So send some of it my way, if you would be so kind. Thanks!

No, no, you're not supposed to keep it all to yourself!!! I know you don't remember, but I asked for some, so play nice and SHARE! Besides, if you give me some, maybe you'll remember who WOT is.

Whoops! OK, sorry, I messed things up with my replies...first of all, thanks to SFL for passing along that dementia. I definitely felt the effects of it yesterday when I left the water running in the sink while I took a shower and came out of the shower to find that the rest of the room had taken a shower as well. So muchas gracias! And for poor Hattie/Laura, SO SORRY! I read your comment quickly and thought it was SFL trying to trick me again. WOT is Clair's mother. Maybe SFL and WOT will come to an event to see their darling daughter and you will get to meet them!! That would be fun!!! :)
